This is a completely scratch built full size replica of the preproduction Concept R2D2 visualised by Ralph Mcquarrie back in 1976 for the R2D2 that we know so well. I first saw it as a set of 3 sketches inside the 'STAR WARS CHRONICLES' book, one from the front, one side and one from the back so get your copy of the book to see what I worked from. Each sketch had slightly different details so I had to tie them together into something that respected aspects of each design.

The Concept R2 is very different to the final design, its wider and has masses more surface greeblies. Theres 2 robot arms that never made it to production along with the radar, the 3 feet were much smoother, the control arms were much more chunky and the side legs were massive and very blocky. The dome itself was the same size but had much more detail, a smaller main eye and no holoeyes. Its impossible to see whether the sketches intended there to be lighting inside the dome. Alot of my work has been 'best guess' due to some parts of the sketches being quite loose....

The photos you see are of a near complete replica and is oversprayed in white satin for uniformity. The last stages are to use preproduction paintings to assist with paint schemes and I am going for a light sand weathering.

All parts are made now and all that it needs is the lower body robot arm fixing in place and steel wires/cables fixing to this and the dome arm.

The materials used were bendy ply stretched over a wooden frame for the body, MDF for the 3 feet, the side legs and the middle leg. The dome is a regular 18 inch R2D2 dome with all the surface details removed and reworked. Everything is then coated in various thicknesses of plasticard and other resin details. The 4 arms, (2 control arms fixed into the body and 2 robot arms) along with the radar are all solid resin piece parts.

....and 2 full cans of UPOL 3.5l car filler and  7x150ml bottles of superglue for starters!

Heres the only photo I have so far of the fully painted concept R2 which I just lifted from the RPF website. The location is the Birmingham NEC Memorabilia show, 24-25 Nov 2012. Its painted as R.M. illustrated in his concept painting which is simple sandy weathering.
